Aakaar Charitable Trust is dedicated to raising awareness around the sensitive social issue of child adoption. We provide counselling and emotional support to adoptive parents and foster families before and during the adoption process and foster care situations. Our goal is to ensure that every child has a right to a safe home and a loving family.
Current Adoption Trends
Adoption rates in India have historically been low and have seen a further decline in recent years. According to the latest statistics from the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), adoption rates in India for the year 2023-2024 show a total of 4,029 adoptions, with 3,580 being in-country adoptions and 449 inter-country adoptions (Central Adoption Resource Authority).
These numbers are concerning given India’s vast population. Currently, there are only 2,131 children legally free for adoption, with the majority (1,356) being special needs children. Of these, 742 are girls. Additionally, there are over 30,000 prospective parents waiting to adopt, which highlights the significant disparity between the number of available children and the number of parents eager to adopt. Challenges in the Adoption Process
The adoption process in India is hindered by lengthy legal procedures required to declare children legally free for adoption. This process involves the district child welfare committee and can take up to three years to complete. Such delays contribute to the low number of children available for adoption despite the high demand from prospective parents.
Aakaar's Role in Supporting Adoption
Aakaar Charitable Trust has been working in this field for over six years and has helped several couples in and around the Pune and Mumbai regions to choose the best workable option for them. We believe that every child deserves a loving family and a safe home. Through our counselling services, we aim to provide the necessary emotional support to adoptive parents and foster families, ensuring a smooth transition and fostering process.
